North Korea has once again launched ballistic missiles toward waters off its east coast on Monday morning after the regime vowed to take strong countermeasures, in response to the recent military exercise held between South Korea, the U. S. and Japan. The South''s Joint Chiefs of Staff said it detected two ballistic missiles fired shortly after 5AM with about ten minutes between the launches. This comes less than a week after the North claimed to have successfully tested a missile carrying multiple warheads. Last week, South Korea, the U. S. , and Japan carried out their first multi- domain military exercise in waters south of Jejudo Island. 2. Moving on to different news, The police are conducting further investigations into the Aricell lithium battery factory fire incident which killed twenty-three workers. It was announced on Saturday that witness statements indicated they had never received any safety training and were unaware of the location of the emergency exits. During a week-long investigation since the fire broke out last week, the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police have called in over twenty witnesses. 3. Switching gears to economy news, South Korea''s exports extended on-year gains to the ninth straight month in June on the back of record performance of semiconductors. According to the data compiled by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, outbound shipments rose 5. 1 percent on-year to 57 billion dollars last month. Imports shed 7. 5 percent on-year to 49 billion dollars last month, resulting in a trade surplus of 8 billion dollars. South Korea has been maintaining a trade surplus for 13 consecutive months. By sector, exports of semiconductors shot up 50. 9 percent over the period to 13. 4 billion dollars. 4. South Korea announced this morning it plans to create a new ministry that will focus on tackling the country''s falling birth rate. The new ''Ministry of Population Strategy Planning'' will be in charge of creating strategies regarding population issues, including the low birth rate, the aging society and immigration policies. It will also have the authority to review budgets and consult with other ministries on related projects. The head of the ministry will also serve as the country''s deputy prime minister for social affairs. currently served by the education minister. 5. South Korea begins the second half of 2024 with significant changes starting Monday. This comes as the finance ministry on Sunday released its booklet that contains changes to be implemented for the second half of 2024, including 233 policy changes. One of the key changes for currency traders is the extension of trading hours for the U. S. dollar in the foreign exchange market. The new hours will be from 9 AM to 2 AM the following day, significantly longer than the current 9 AM to 3:30 PM. Trading hours for the Korean won and other currencies will remain the same at 9AM to 3:30PM. The government funded after school program called ''Neulbom School'' will also be expanded to be available to all first graders in all 61-hundred primary schools nationwide. Moving to weather forecast, On and off monsoon rain continues on Jejudo Island, but the mainland will be free from monsoon rain today. However, most of Korea will experience increasing heat. Afternoon highs should be 1 to 5 degrees Celsius higher this afternoon. Seoul, Daejeon and Chuncheon should get up to 31 degrees this afternoon, Gyeongju will have highs soaring to 33 degrees. Mostly sunny skies for most parts with Gangwon-do province and east of Gyeonggi-do province seeing 5 to 20 millimeters of passing rain. Monsoon rain is forecast to return tomorrow. Rain will lash down on Jejudo Island dumping up to 150 millimeters of showers, central areas could see more than 120 millimeters into Wednesday along with gusty winds. Highs will range between 26 and 33 degrees Celsius. As for the highs, Seoul will be 31 degrees, while Busan and Jejudo Island will be 27 and 27 degrees in the afternoon.
